Marijke holds a Master of Science in Agricultural Economics from Wageningen University (the Netherlands) and a European Master in Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness from École Nationale Supérieure Agronomique de Rennes (France). Since 2006, Marijke has been an integral part of the European Commission at the Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development (DG AGRI) and has been working various areas of agricultural policy and markets. Currently she works as a policy officer in the unit responsible for wine, spirit drinks, and fruits. Before joining the European Commission, she contributed to the development of national and European agricultural policies through her work within agricultural organizations.

Lena Maas is the Head of R&D at Hudson River, responsible for managing the genetics, CRISPR editing and sequencing operations of the BioMaas platform. Her background is in molecular plant biotechnology and she holds a PhD molecular biology with focus on transcriptional regulation of plant regeneration.

Philippe Binard joined the fresh fruit and vegetables business in 1987. Since 2001, he is the General Delegate of Freshfel Europe , the European Association representing the interest of the fresh fruit and vegetables sector. Freshfel ( www.freshfel.org) incorporates more than 200 members (associations and companies) across the fresh produce supply chain from production down to retail. Philippe Binard has also other responsibility including the Secretary General of WAPA (World Apple and Pear Association -www.wapa-association.org) and WCO ( World Citrus Organisation).

Mr Nabil Belmkaddem holds a master’s degree in Plant Science from California State Universtity, Fresno. He has 30 years of experience in fruit production and exports. Since 2017 he has been the general manager of Cooperative Bestberry which is a grower organization based in Larache in North Morocco. Bestberry operates in exports of all berries both fresh and frozen and has partners in all the major European markets. Mr Nabil is a member of the Moroccan Association of berry packers and exporters and has been a speaker in numerous berry congresses in Morocco and in Europe.

Huan Zhangis an agriculture consultant based in China and the founder of Twinkle StarBerry Consulting Company. He earned his Ph.D. from Washington StateUniversity’s Small Fruits Horticulture Program, where he developed extensiveexpertise in collaborating with berry growers. Huan has also gained valuableexperience working with international berry companies. He is committed tosharing his insights and driving advancements in the berry industry. Outside ofwork, Huan enjoys spending time in the fields with his wife and daughter,fostering a family passion for agriculture.

Bart De Langhe is a behavioral scientist and marketing professor with an international career. He is currently on the faculty at KU Leuven and Vlerick Business School in Belgium.
He earnedhis PhD at Erasmus University in the Netherlands and previously held faculty positions at ESADE Business School in Spain and the University of Colorado Boulder in the United States. He has also been a visiting scholar at leading institutions such as the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS).
Professor De Langhe’s research and teaching lie at the intersection of behavioral science, data analytics, and marketing. His work focuses on helping organizations make better decisions by combining analytical rigor with insights into human behavior. He is the author of Decision-Driven Analytics (WhartonSchool Press), a practical guide that is reshaping how companies worldwidethink about the role of analytics in decision-making. His teaching excellence has been recognized with the Poets & Quants Best Professor Award, adistinction honoring educators who leave a lasting mark on their students and institutions. He currently serves as an Associate Editor at the Journal of Consumer Research and is a member of the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Marketing.

Marieke Appel is an experienced marketing and communications professional at Driscoll’s, the global market leader in fresh berries. Over the past 15 years, she has been instrumental in introducing and establishing the Driscoll’s brand across the EMEA region, and she has been playing a key role in the global repositioning of the Driscoll's brand.
She is passionate about building authentic food brands, firmly believing that a brand can only earn trust and loyalty when its story is genuine and when it is used as a force for good.
Before joining Driscoll’s, Marieke Appel held various roles in the healthy and natural food and FMCG sectors, gaining over a decade of international experience in marketing and business development. In her current role as Strategic Engagement and Communications Manager, she focuses on meaningful storytelling, while creating connections with the broader community.

Jan Engelen is currently Manager Sustainability, Innovation & Branding at Coöperatie Hoogstraten, a major player in the fresh produce business. Jan started his career after finishing his Master Degree in Horticultural Engineering in 1998 at the editorial board of Proeftuinnieuws; a publication appealing to both fruit and vegetable producers and associated agribusiness. In 2000 Jan worked for Syngenta Seeds as a sales representative in Belgium and the Netherlands. In 2002, he became Business Development Manager for Syngenta Seeds after which he joined Coöperatie Hoogstraten in 2005. Between 2018 and 2022 Jan worked as Marketing & Sales Manager for Bakker Belgium NV – part of the Greenyard Group. In March 2022 he re-joined the team in Hoogstraten.

With over 40 years of experience in strawberry purchasing and sales, Curd Vanmarcke is a well-known figure in the European fresh produce sector. His career began in 1982 at the family business Vanmarcke Roger & Sons, where he gained extensive expertise in the trade and export of strawberries.
In 1997, following the acquisition of the family business by Vergro NV, he joined the company and has since played a key role in expanding its export operations. Today, as Sales Manager at Vergro NV, Curd oversees international sales and purchasing strategies, with a continued focus on strawberries.
Driven by genuine enthusiasm, his personal motto reflects his lifelong dedication:

Joeri Beniest, Head of Fruit and Vegetable Purchasing at Lidl, has spent 10 years at the company, with 9 of those years dedicated to fruit and vegetable procurement. His expertise lies in building strong, sustainable partnerships, ensuring top-quality produce. "Growing is something we do together with our partners" is his mantra as he works to deliver the best for customers every time.

Michiel Vermeiren is currently responsible for the fruit business unit at Coöperatie Hoogstraten, a major player in the fresh produce business. Strawberries are obviously the biggest category within the fruit segment, but Coöperatie Hoogstraten also offers blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and kiwi berries. Michiel started his career in Hoogstraten as sales and business analyst in 2020. He was working on different projects to gain more insight in the data and processes within the organisation. From that position, he often worked intensively with the sales and quality team which he is now leading.

She holds a degree in Industrial Engineering and a Master’s in Project Management. Her career has focused on the development and oversight of water treatment and distribution systems, with a strong emphasis on process optimization, energy efficiency, and life cycle cost analysis.
Combining technical, economic, and environmental perspectives, she promotes sustainable and resilient solutions to address the complex challenges of water scarcity and climate adaptation.

With a solid background in agricultural sciences and over 15 years of experience inthe horticultural sector, Thijs De Langhe plays a key role in shaping DCM’s international strategy for resilient growing. As Business Development Director, he works closely with local teams, advisors and growers to translate regional challenges into tailored, sustainable solutions. His work spans multiple crops, but the strawberry sector is a particular focus, where DCM has achievedremarkable results in improving plant resilience.
Thijs is adriving force behind product innovation at DCM, ensuring that each development is rooted in the specific needs of growers across different markets. Francois-Simon is an agronomist and he comesfrom the horticultural industry. He has a Master’s degree in soilscience, where he studied soil matrix nutritional profiles and perennial plantdevelopment and architecture. At the same time, he worked as a researchassociate where he experienced the range of applied and field-based workwith regards to the fundamentals. Then he became a grower at a large tomatofacility where he learned to manage greenhouse crops with precision andunderstand growth in a fluctuating environment. He has worked for Bergergrowing media company for more than 7 years where he combined knowledge andexperience to develop R&D in soft fruit. He played a significant role inenhancing R&D where he concentrates upon wood fiber and berry crops. Thisincludes screening, data-driven precision growing, perfecting growing media andconnecting it to optimal agronomic parameters. He also worked as a groweradvisor for the same company where he advanced success in precisionhorticulture and the development of alternative production systems andaccompanying related transitions. He was awarded the GPN annual forty underforty industry recognition. His smart recommendations are helpful to optimizethe irrigation strategy and guide crops to the desired balance. He has recentlyjoined the company Innoserres as a production manager to pursue thecompany expansion through an innovative greenhouse project in a semi-closedenvironment for growing strawberries.

FreddieReed is Product Manager at Intelligent Growth Solutions (IGS), bringing over nine years of experience in the agri-tech industry. With a strong foundation in both traditional and modern agricultural systems. Freddie spent four years working on innovation projects in the horticulture, arable and livestock sectors before moving into Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) space.
A graduate in Mechanical Engineering with a farming background, Freddie combines technical expertise with practical agricultural insight to deliver scalable solutions that support sustainable food production. Jan van Anken is Managing Director of Flevo Berry. Together with Marcel Suiker he leads a breeding company that focusses purely on strawberries. Their goal is to introduce varieties with excellent fruit full of taste and flavour. Flevo Berry wants to enable sustainable strawberry cultivation by introducing strong varieties. Varieties which are low in maintenance, less vulnerable for diseases, easier to pick and that can be grown using only biological plant protection. Where Marcel, one of the best strawberry breeders, focusses on development. Jan task is to run the company and make sure varieties get the right introduction and will become a commercial success.

Cynthia Hadinoto is AI lead at Möbius Business Redesign, an international business & AI consultancy firm. She holds a Business Engineering degree with a specialization in Financial Engineering, and researched forecasting techniques for futures prices in agricultural commodity markets during her studies. Over the course of eight years in the financial sector—at KBC and JP Morgan —Cynthia specialized in fixed‑income trading and quantitative model development.
Today, she is leading a team of data scientists at Möbius Business Redesign, where she combines her passion for cracking complex forecasting, planning and optimization challenges with the latest machine learning algorithms. Cynthia was technical lead in a recent strawberry yield AI forecasting project at Coöperatie Hoogstraten.

Jonathan Aelterman is partner at Möbius Business Redesign,an international business & AI consultancy firm highly active in the food and beverages sector. With an engineering degree in computer science and experience in over 80 transformation and optimization projects, Jonathan uses his background to guide customers in realizing their strategy and increasing operational efficiency. Supported by a team of data scientists, Jonathan was project lead in a recent project at Coöperatie Hoogstraten to forecast strawberry yield using the latest techniques in Artificial Intelligence.

Hilde Nelissen is Professor at Ghent University and Group Leader at the VIB-UGent Center for Plant Systems Biology, where she leads the Plant Growth Dynamics team. Her research explores how growth processes determine final plant organ size, with a focus on maize. Her team investigates the regulatory networks that control organ growth and yield, aiming to develop climate-resilient crops. As Adjunct Director of the center, Hilde promotes a collaborative and inclusive research environment that supports innovation in plant science.
