Field trip

Complementing the congress programme is a day of field trips on 19 September.

We offer one tour with a variety of themes. We will split the group into four and carry out the tour in different ways.

We will be visiting:

Strawberry Production – Gestelberries (Meer, Belgium)

Hoogstraten is home to over 120 unique strawberry growers. Together they cultivate and distribute topquality fresh fruit. One of them is Luc Krijnen, a dedicated strawberry grower, together with his wife Ann. As parents of five children, they cultivate strawberries for Coöperatie Hoogstraten with great passion. From April until the end of the year, they strive to deliver the very best strawberries. To achieve this, they use different cultivation methods to ensure a long season ofdelicious fruit.

Drawing on the knowledge from Luc’s parents’ farm and more than 25 years of experience in strawberry growing, they stand on solid ground. In early April, their first strawberries come from protected cultivation, while by mid-June their open-field strawberries are beautifully red and sweet – the true taste of summer as we remember it. With several varieties in production, they ensure that consumers can enjoy the best possible strawberries all year round.

RKW Hyplast (Hoogstraten, Belgium)

RKW Group is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of polyolefin-based film solutions. Their innovative and sustainable films enable customers to improve the daily life of consumers all over the world. They are a market leader in the areas of hygiene and agricultural films as well as films for the food and beverage industries and powdery goods. Moreover, they supply films and nonwovens for the chemical and processing industries as well as the medical, automotive and construction sectors. Their independent family-owned company is headquartered in Mannheim, Germany and employs approximately 2,800 people across 17 locations worldwide.

Growtec/ MJ-Tech/ Robur (Etten - Leur, The Netherlands)

MJ-Tech - for humidity control and natural cooling

From cultivation optimization to dripirrigation and growing systems, learn why Growtec is simply a better way to grow.

Robur - innovations in crop care

Our robots and advanced machinery make labor easier and ensure effective crop care. Forgrowers who want to get the best results from their crop. From watering, misting, ribbon insertion to spraying the crop. In addition, we also know ourway around in systems for quality control and cargo handling. Over 100 years standing, innovation keeps us vital!

Strawberry Production – Van Oers Berry (Prinsenbeek, The Netherlands)

Van Oers Fruit is a true family business in strawberries. Joost and Edith van Oers began growing beef tomatoes in 1989. As Edith grew upon an open field strawberry farm, her interest in the crop never disappeared. In 1993, alongside tomato cultivation, they also started growing open field strawberries, and soon after the greenhouse was converted entirely tostrawberry production.

Since 2018, their son Martijn has been workingfull-time in the company, and more recently their daughter Ilse also joined, making it a genuine family enterprise. Today, they produce strawberries almostall year round, made possible by assimilation lighting, different varieties and varied planting dates. All their strawberries are grown sustainably on substrate and in greenhouses. They use CHP units to generate their own electricity and heat, and rely as much as possible on biological crop protection. To safeguard quality, they manage the propagation and cultivation of their own plant material and conduct trials with new varieties, ensuring they remain at the forefront of the market.

Previous edition of the ISC

ISC Belgium - quotes
Gaston Opdekamp
MANAGING DIRECTOR, COÖPERATIE HOOGSTRATEN

“Strawberry industry is important in all EU countries, adopting different cultivation systems depending to the climatic conditions and type of agricultural technologies available. Coöperatie Hoogstraten represent the most advanced model for strawberry industry in center of EU and now spreading in different part of the world. The previous editions or the Strawberry symposium organized by Coöperatie Hoogstraten have been of high impact to bridge a gap between the strawberry academic and the industrial aspects on an international range: from research to production, from the market to the consumer.I am sure that the Strawberry Congress they are planning for September 2022 will still be a great example of scientific and technical interaction for the strawberry world, particularly awaited after the long period of restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Bruno Mezzetti
Full professor at Marche Polytechnic University Ancona
ISC Belgium - Quote

"The International Strawberry Congress is an excellent opportunity for scientists to meet again, and to exchange and discuss newest insights of strawberry research. As a scientist I think it is fantastic to also get a taste of strawberry commercialization topics at this conference, and to be able to expand my network in the strawberry industry. After a long break of international meetings, I’m looking forward to catch up with all strawberry professionals in Antwerp again!"

ISC Belgium - Quotes
Anja Stas
CHIEF COMMERCIAL OFFICER, KMDA

“The previous Congresses offered an exciting program with strawberry experts from around the globe in the historic city of Antwerp.  The day-long tour of strawberry operation in the Netherlands and Belgium provided a glimpse of modern glasshouse fruit and transplant production technology.  This is an excellent venue to share and exchange knowledge and ideas with your old colleagues and students from around the world interested in advancing the science and cultivation of the strawberry and delivering high quality and flavorful berries to consumers.  I encourage all in the strawberry community to attend the Congress in 2022!”
